The 408 balloonists at the Lorraine Mondial international festival were trying to better a feat that was only set a week ago when 343 balloons took off at the same event.
Pictures of the day have proven to be a hit online, with many people tweeting their amazement at the number of people taking part.
Theo Heselmans wrote: ‘Very impressive! We have about 70 balloons each year, but this is mind blowing.’
Alec Walker was also in awe, adding: ‘Fantastic! Would’ve loved to have been there! World Record 408 balloons takeoff at Lorraine Mondial Air Balloons 2013.’
Hot air balloon manufacturer Cameron Balloons Ltd was one of the participants at the Chambley-Bussieres Aerodrome venue.
